Plastic hangers for clothes are one of the many things that are seen in the landfills leaching bi-phenyl A and benzene. Most of these are thrown by dry cleaning stores or clothing store or by hospitals. It has been observed that almost 85% of the hangers that are made from plastic are not recycled or reused. |
Some people have the misconception that plastic hangers cannot be recycled at all. The fact is that it is a bit difficult to recycle plastic hangers along with plastic bags or bottles but not impossible.
Depending on the type of plastic resins of which the hangers are made of, it is possible to recycle the plastic hangers. What makes recycling plastic hangers difficult is the use of foam, tissue paper, soft plastic and fabric which gets attached to them. This results in the formation of mixture of materials which cannot be processed by many recycling centers.
Moreover, most of the hangers are made by mixing different type of plastics like polystyrene No. 6 and K-resin, which cannot be handled by many recycling machines. However, in recent times there are many hangers that are made from PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) which can be recycled. These hangers are produced by keeping in mind about the situations when the hangers are no longer useful. Hangers are also being made from materials which are environmentally friendly and can be easily recycled by recycling machines.
However, recycling of plastic hangers should be used as a last resort and every effort should be made to reuse them yourselves or to give them to clothing stores or dry cleaners which in turn can use them.
