Recycling of paper is basically a process of converting the waste paper, which is useless, into an almost new paper which then can be used to make paper products. The process of paper recycling basically consists of three steps: collection, pulping and de-inking. |
The task of collecting used paper is the first step in the recycling process. This paper is then sent to the recycling facility for further processing. There are many means by which the used paper can be collected.
For example, recycling companies often purchase the raw materials, which are used for recycling, from paper mills, paper merchants, waste management firms and other commercial and industrial sources. Paper can also be collected from old magazines and newspapers and from households. While collecting papers one must ensure that it does not get contaminated as such papers cannot be used for recycling.
Since the fibers of waste papers have already been used, they need to be cleaned and sorted. Hence, after the paper has been collected, it is then sorted according to grade and type. After this is done, the paper is sent to the paper mills where it is converted into pulp and contaminants which are non-fibrous such as metal, glass, plastic etc. are removed. The remaining fibers are then constantly cleaned and the resulting pulp is refined in order to make it appropriate for making paper.
In order to recycle paper it is often necessary to remove inks from the recovered paper to increase the purity and whiteness. To remove the ink, the recovered paper is often dispersed in water and then hydrogen peroxide is used to bleach the fibers. Rollers are then used to remove the water from the pulp and when the pulp dries, it gives the paper
