The toxic waste is often used as an interchange for hazardous waste. The toxic wastes either solid or liquid have the following five characters – corrosivity, ignitability, toxicity, reactivity, and posing hazards to the environment or biological organisms. According to Title 40 of Code of Federal Regulations the toxic waste comes from sources like – pesticides, mining wastes, industrial wastes, radioactive wastes and others.

According to the Institute of Chemical Waste Management, about 15% of garbage produced from home can be classified as toxic. Even detergent lather can be toxic in the sense it can accumulate at one place and turn into/decompose into a harmful substance. Though 85% of toxic wastes are dumped properly but 15% of the toxic waste somehow reach the environment and create havoc. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) toxic wastes can seep into the water bodies and also contaminated ground water levels beyond expectations. It contaminates the main source of water on which humans rely the most. Today still more than 50% of population relies on underground water for their daily activities.

The toxic substances dumped in an area can be responsible for killing the surrounding greenery, trees, and may contaminate the air favoring pathogens to develop. Such cases with create human illness. In worst cases when toxic wastes contaminate land and water of large area, it can be responsible for some epidemic in the area.
