Soil consists of organic & inorganic layers that cover the earth’s surface. |
This typically is the uppermost layer of the soil. The inorganic portion is made up of year old rock fragments which form a bed due to weathering.Soil pollution is the contamination of soil with toxic compounds, chemicals, salts, radioactive materials, or disease causing agents, which have adverse effects on plant growth and animal health. It is caused mostly by manmade alterations in the environment. It is especially of concern because it can give rise to health hazards. This contamination can lead to secondary contamination of water supplies.
Various causes of pollution are:
1. Fertilizers contaminate the soil with impurities, which come from the raw materials used for their manufacture. There are certain metals used in fertilizers, which are not degradable. These accumulate in the soil & become poison for the crops.
2. There are lots of insects that attack the crop throughout the year. To kill these farmers us the crops at all t kill unwanted populations living in or on their crops, farmers use pesticides. These can be toxic if the pesticides are non bio degradable.
3.There is lot of solid waste that is dumped by humans, lot of it like paper is degradable. The portion of solid waste that is not is, oils, battery metals, heavy metals & organic solvents. . These can in the long run, get deposited to the soils of the surrounding area and pollute them.
