The sound of horns from cars, the sound of jets flying overhead, music blaring from cars and discos, television at high volume, fireworks, noise from the machines used in factories etc are all sources of noise pollution. |
Noise pollution has a devastating impact on the environment, humans and animals.Too much noise is annoying and even frustrating at times. But this is not all, high levels of noise can affect ones hearing. Exposure to noise over 85dBA will eventually affect hearing. Besides high levels of noise can also cause rise in blood pressure, stomach problems, heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, heart disease etc. This affects the elderly more than the younger generation. Sleep disturbances caused by too much noise can result in insomnia and irritability. Lack of sleep affects ones ability to think and comprehend situations. As a result, their performance at work and school is greatly affected.
Another problem is that too much noise interferes with ordinary verbal communication. High levels of noise can have a disturbing impact on a developing fetus since noise gets transmitted into the womb. The effects of noise pollution are not restricted to humans alone. Even animals tend to get disturbed by high levels of noise. Animals like cows; dogs etc get scared and tensed when exposed to too much noise. Therefore it is essential to control sound pollution.
This can be done by using sound proof material while building factories, adhering to rules regarding the blaring of horns, listening to television and radio at moderate volume, using silencers in motor bikes, obeying laws regarding the use of loudspeakers and microphones and so on. We need to spread awareness about noise pollution and its effects so that people behave more responsibly when it comes to controlling noise.
