Tetrafluoroethane is one of the greenhouse gases. It is also used by human beings in refrigeration processes and air conditioners. It is used as a coolant in automobiles. This gas can only be produced by human beings by using various combinations of oils. There are several other applications of Tetrafluoroethane as solvents and in drugs. |
After research today, scientists have found that it has ozone depleting properties. It acts as a precursor to the global warming effect. Also, today, the research indicates that the levels of Tetrafluoroethane have increased significantly in the atmosphere. It could have been added only through human activities.
Another property of Tetrafluoroethane is that it slowly converts into acid, and this could also cause acid rain in the future. If the levels increase at the current rate, then there could be irreversible damages to the environment. When this particular gas gets heated above 20 degrees Celsius then it starts releasing toxic gases like hydrogen fluoride. If these gases are inhaled in excess, then they could become lethal.
There are hundreds of products that contain Tetrafluoroethane like aerosols, perfumes, asthma inhalers, cooling agents and many more. These are emitted on a daily basis into the environment by thousands of people. The gas though solves the purpose, also tends to stagnate in the atmosphere. That is how it is adding to the greenhouse gases. Now it has been revealed that it can play a large role in the depletion of the ozone layer. If the ozone layer depletes, then human beings and life forms cannot survive.
