Greenhouse gases are very important for the earth to stay warm enough. However, there is a difference between warm and hot. Excess greenhouse gases can cause hotter climates, extreme weather conditions, increase natural calamities and also cause deforestation and extinction of animals. |
What are greenhouse gases? Green house gases are methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ozone and water vapor. These are made naturally by the earth. However, today, the levels of these gases are increasing ridiculously because the urban population is adding to them tremendously. Some of the gases generate heat while others also cool down the atmosphere. So, these gases always maintain a balanced ratio. But industrial and vehicle pollution is adding up to these causes and is creating imbalances in this perfect ratio.
There are several things that we do in our urban lives which add to the green house gases. One is car pollution. Most of the families in the United States own two or more cars, and use them too. Very few people use public transport. We use electricity that is generated by burning coal. A very low percentage of electricity created by water or nuclear energy is used. The rest is generated by coal. Industrial pollution is also a huge factor. One common thing among all these sources of pollution is emission of carbon dioxide. It is one of the most important greenhouse gases. By increasing the levels of carbon dioxide, we are increasing the earth’s standard temperature also. Also, coal and oils are fossil fuels of the earth and cannot be replaced.
