The atmosphere is made up of greenhouse gases. There are many gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Each of these types has different wave lengths. That is why their capacity to hold on light or heat is different.
The sun sends a lot of energy into the space in different spectrum of wave lengths and are measured based on several factors like visibility. For example, the ultra violet light is extremely energetic as it is tends to penetrate more. It has the capacity to break any molecule and that is why it is considered dangerous for human skin.
The gases that blanket the earth absorb these rays from the sun, be it ultraviolet or the infrared light. It absorbs 30 percent of it and releases the remaining into space. Basically, these gases form a thick blanket and stop the heat from escaping the earth’s surface. The delayed process keeps the earth’s surface warm enough. However, if a lot of heat is being generated within the surface of the earth, then the surface can become like an oven. No one can survive when it is hotter than the boiling point and colder than the freezing point.
