The greenhouse effect is caused by the green house gases. These gases absorb light form the sun as heat and trap the heat energy. The heat stays in the atmosphere for a long period of time. It is because of these gases that the earth is warm enough. If these gases were not present, then the earth would have been a very cold place without any life. Microorganisms need heat to survive.

There are different kinds of gases with varied capacities of retaining heat. Some of the gases are methane, Nitrous oxide, water vapor, oxygen, carbon dioxide and ozone. These gases form layers in the atmosphere. The ozone layer is the coldest and it plays a balancing effect by filtering the Sun’s rays. Most of the greenhouse gases occur naturally in the environment and they have a balanced ratio.

Some of the greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere by human activity also. Some of these activities are industrial processes, burning toxic materials, generating electricity using fossil fuels and vehicle emissions.

The greenhouse effects are actually beneficial for the earth. Today, what we have is the enhanced greenhouse effect, where the temperature of the earth is much higher than it used to be 200 years ago. However, we cannot afford to have a higher temperature than we have today and that is why controlling the green house effect is also essential.
