Greenhouse effect is a natural process that the Earth has to go through periodically. It maintains the earth’s temperature at optimum levels so that living organisms can survive. Without the greenhouse effects, the earth would be a very cold place. Today, what the world is experiencing is the enhanced greenhouse effect. |
The greenhouse effect is caused by the greenhouse gases that are present in the earth’s atmosphere already. The solar radiation is absorbed by these gases and some of it reaches the earth. The gases absorb the light as heat energy. Most of the greenhouse gases are made naturally by the earth.
However, as a result of man-made activities, these gases have been increasing in the atmosphere. Fossil fuels are minerals and naturally present things like coal and wood that have existed on the Earth for a thousand million years. When these fossil fuels are burnt, they give out carbon dioxide. It is not safe to burn these fossil fuels. When these fuels are burnt, they give out greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. These gases add to the atmospheric gases present naturally and generate more heat. In addition, fossil fuels take a million years to form, and are not renewable sources of energy.
Scientists believe that due to the burning of fossil fuels alone, over the last 250 years the earth’s temperature has increased by 25 percent. Due to deforestation, the earth does not have an effective cooling process either. The tropical rain forests have decreased also as an aftermath.
