Local mean sea level (LMSL) is the average height of the sea measured over a period of time. |
Increase in the water levels of the sea above the Local mean sea level due to global warming and the melting of glaciers and icebergs and excessive rains etc is called sea level Rise. The rise in the sea levels has been at a higher rate than ever in the last few decades. The sea levels increase because of various different factors. Human beings also play a big role in the increase of sea levels. The mankind has been polluting the atmosphere since ages and because of this pollution in the atmosphere the greenhouse warming is accelerating the melting of icebergs and glaciers which result in sea levels rise. There are a few other factors as well in the rising of the sea levels and oceans levels all across the world. Excessive rains are also a reason at times. All the water in the lakes and rivers that overflows due to rains comes to the seas eventually.
Sea levels also show a short time rise than the Local mean sea level during the period of high tides in the sea. The scientists believe the main reason is the mass balance of the ice bodies in the world. If the ice coming in into these ice bodies is more than the ice going out, the sea levels do not rise and on the other hand if this is reversed the sea levels rise constantly
