We live in the world where the climate is being modified substantially by our activities. |
These changes lead to various impacts and one of them is sea level rise at an unexpected rate in the last few decades. The climate has changed throughout the earth’s history and in last 400 000 years four glacial cycles have been followed by our climate. Incoming solar radiations time and amount has changed significantly due to this.3 meters per century was the rate at which the sea levels rose 21,000 years ago. The sea levels rose at the rate of only 0.2 meters between 1000 BP to the late 19th century. During the 20th century there was an average increase in sea levels by 0.17 meters.
If we check the statistics since 1900 the sea levels rose to 50 meters above the normal sea level in 50 years by the year 1950. Between the years 1950 and 2000 the sea levels rose at a much faster rate. In the year 2000 the sea level was 175 mm meaning it rose at the rate of 75 meters in these 50 years. From the year 2000 to 2010 it has risen 25 meters meaning if it continues to rise at this high rate the sea levels will go upto 300mm by the year 2050.
Computer models and computer generated reports reflect that the sea levels will be rising at a very past pace in the coming years. Many scientists have found in their studies that this needs to be taken care of before it’s too late.
