Global warming is the phenomenon of an increase in the average temperature near the surface of the earth due to an increased absorption of infrared radiations from the sun. |
This has occurred due to a rapid increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which traps and prevents these toxic gases to escaping out of the earth’s atmosphere.Burning of fossil fuels, emissions of polluted smoke and gases from industrial waste and automobiles has caused the rise in the average temperature in the planet. Variations in climatic conditions such as volcanic eruptions and increased solar radiation have further added to this phenomenon.
Global warming has resulted in rapid melting of ice caps and huge ice shelves, especially in cold Arctic and Antarctic regions. In consequence, large quantity of icy water has been discharged into the vast oceans, resulting in a rise of the sea levels. A varied precipitation level caused by increase in water evaporation is observed on the earth’s surface. Variable levels of rainfalls, floods, droughts and forest fires along with increase in volcanic eruptions are some of the other undesirable consequences of global warming.
With the increase in the average temperature, some of the species of plants and animals have been endangered and nearing extinction. This is further aggravated by the human encroachment in the natural flora and fauna system. Agricultural yields have been highly affected all over the world. Scientists are working to develop new technologies to help crops better adapt and yield more in response to the new seasonal variations. It is high time that human beings become increasingly responsible to conserve the precious natural resources on the planet in order to restore a greener and safer world for the future generations.
