The crop yields have varied over time due to unpredictable rainfall which has become very erratic in the recent past. There is a huge depletion in the availability of natural water resources as the evaporation levels have increased to a large extent due to the average increase in the temperature across the world. This results in a huge demand of water for irrigating the farmlands to get the maximum yields from the crops. The quality of surface and ground water has deteriorated due to pollution and contamination of water with harmful chemicals and industrial waste. The uncontrolled disposal of waste products in water bodies is resulting in harming the marine communities. Further, the increase in the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides has resulted in soaring food prices which have a negative impact on the economy today. 

Increase in the natural calamities like forest fires, floods, droughts, volcanoes due to the overall climatic changes across the globe has affected the availability of fertile land for cultivating crops. Today, scientists are encouraged to study the seasonal variations to help better plan the change of planting dates and choose longer seasonal varieties to maximize the crop yields.
