The region of Western Samoa experiences dry season between April and October when the climate is cool. The climate is hot between the months of November and March when the regions gets rain. |
Cyclones are a common generally between the months of December and March. The annual temperature in the region does not vary much due to the abundant rainfall and increase in the cloud cover. This helps the region to stay comparatively cooler in the hot weather. Rainfall occurs almost the entire year and only differs by the altitude and location.
The Western Samoa region is highly volcanic in nature. Infiltration rate is also on the higher side due to the frequent eruptions of volcanoes. Surface water that is collected from the rainfall is used for domestic purposes as well as for generating hydro-electricity. Water shortage has been seen only in the rural areas, in the recent years.
Western Samoa experiences frequent dry periods as the catchments areas are quite limited. In addition, soil erosion decreases the quality of water. The awareness for water conservation among the general population is also very negligible. The high volcanic activity also results in a rise in the sea level and affected the size of lagoons and reefs in the area. Human encroachment has also resulted in deterioration of the general quality of sea life and coral reefs.
Pollution has affected various mangrove areas in the northern parts of the shore. Due to the density of population in the country, fishing has increased along the coastal line and the bio-system has had negative impact especially in the lagoon regions. Toxins, dynamites and high use of fishing nets have resulted in wiping out entire communities of fish.
