Six Types Of Penguins In The Antarctic

Penguins are one of the few birds in the world that do not fly. Their only habitat is in the icy regions of Antarctica. They are well adapted to survive in the cold waters, and spend a lot of time in the icy waters to hunt for fish.

There are a total of seventeen varieties of penguins in the world. The largest of all the penguin varieties is the Emperor Penguin which is about 4 ft tall. They have black feet and eyes, dark purple beaks, yellow patch on the breast and weighs between seventy to ninety pounds. They are well adapted to survive and breed in the bitter cold climate of Antarctica.

The King Penguin is the most colorful variety of penguin. They have bright golden colored breast and orange collar. They are the second largest variety and are generally about three feet tall. They have very long beaks which is orange in color on the sides. The eyes and feet are black and they weight about thirty to forty pounds.

Rock hopper Penguin is the crested penguins. These kinds of penguin’s hops and not waddles like the others in the region. They can weigh anything between five to ten pounds and are usually about twenty inches tall. They look aggressive with their red eyes and orange feet and beak.

Gentoo Penguins are the largest stiff-tailed penguins and weights between ten to nineteen pounds. This penguin is about thirty-two inches tall and has a white patch on its head. They swim very fast and survive in the northern parts of Antarctica. They are also known for their superior hunting skills.

The Chinstrap Penguin gets their name from its black line on its chin, which looks like they have a strap on their chin. They have black eyes and beak and orange feet. The average weight of these penguins is between nine to fourteen pounds and is about twenty-eight inches tall. They live in the icebergs around Antarctica.

The last variety is the Little Penguins. They are the smallest variety of penguins and weigh only about two to four pounds. These penguins are around fourteen inches tall.
