Antarctic Sea Life And Climate Change

It has been observed that the coastal parts of Antarctica to be one of the most rapidly warming regions in the globe. There has been a temperature increase of 1°C during the period of last 50 years. Thousands of exotic sea species are threatened as the temperature steadily increases over time. It has been predicted that if the sea temperature increases more by 2°C, then many marine life species would be destroyed.

The shallow water bodies of Antarctica are going through a major upheaval due to this drastic climatic change. In consequence, the floral and faunal communities are been adversely affected. The crabs that are the predators of marine communities are invading into the warm Antarctic waters and disrupting the faunal balance in the marine communities. In Antarctica, pill bugs harmoniously thrive along with giant spiders in the cold sea. The fishes having antifreeze proteins also survive along with these animals. The other predators like sharks and crabs have been shut off from these regions as it is too cold for them to sustain their life. However, as the water gets warmer, these predators are forced to move and start dwelling in the deeper waters; especially due to an increase in the ship traffic that dispose ballast water in the Antarctic regions.

If the crabs invade into the Antarctic regions due to the warming up of the coastal areas, the ecological system can get drastically altered. The faunal balance can get devastated. This phenomenon can also consequently affect the biodiversity in region. The varied and rich bio-system can get totally wiped out.

It is high time that the emissions of greenhouse gases and ship traffic are controlled in order to protect the marine animals in the Antarctic region.

Antarctic-Summer-Weather-Conditions      Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in the world. Unfortunately, it is also one of the places where habitation is quite difficult due to extreme weather conditions. It is a desert in the truest sense, as the annual precipitation rate here is never above 50 mm. More..
